Lately when I forget to bring a lunch to work (which is most of the time, I’ll admit) I’ve been buying kid meals from various fast food places. I now have an awesome collection of Ironman 2 toys and a few new Hot Wheels.
Remember when you used to pick out boxes of cereal by perusing what kind of toy was inside? I do that with kid meals sometimes. Childish, yes, but fun. I can’t help it. I like toys.
There are some great toys in the newsroom here at the Daily Globe. I keep mine in the bottom drawer of my filing cabinet so little visitors in the know can reach them. We get frequent visits from editor Ryan McGaughey’s two little ones, and his daughter Grace knows exactly where to look when she needs something to occupy a few minutes of her time.
She hasn’t been by lately, so the new toys are still wrapped up. It’s just more fun when you get to unwrap a new toy.
In my toy drawer is a variety of interesting stuff. I have a My Little Pony, complete with comb for working on the flowing purple mane. There is a stuffed doll that resembles Thor, the mighty god of Thunder, and a little wooden dump truck. I also have a SpongeBob bouncy ball and a bunch of Tangles.
My favorite toy, however, is a bright green Muppets Magic 8 Ball. It is useful, too. When I can’t decide what to cover or how to handle something, I just consult my magic 8 ball. Some of its advice isn’t very edifying, such as when I am trying to decide between two court trials and the magic 8 ball tells me “Wocka wocka.”
I have a small container of bubbles, but I don’t use them very often as bubble-blowing is frowned upon in the newsroom by the powers that be. Apparently bubbles are considered an outside toy. Who knew?
I’m not the only one with toys in here. Some of you may remember the story of the Rock Em Sock Em Robots kidnapping incident from earlier this winter. They were safely returned to sports editor Aaron Hagen after he paid the ransom, by the way.
Online coordinator Kari Lucin has some great toys, including pirate ships and a pig that grunts.
What can I say? We’re a fun bunch.
